Unable to secure itself a BCS bid, Boise State has hired a P.R. firm to lobby on its behalf to get a BCS bid. TCU has jumped over Boise in the BCS polls and the Broncos are afraid that the BCS may only take one non-automatic qualifier. If it just takes one, that will be TCU because they are higher in the polls. And, if it takes two, the second is most likely to be Notre Dame.
Boise State is saying that this is not a lobbying effort but rather just an effort to let people remember Boise State has “earned” a BCS slot. The claim is that Boise’s win over Oregon surpasses TCU’s win over BYU. My problem with Boise State is that they have zero backup to the Oregon win. They beat Oregon and turned around to beat Miami, OH (1-8), Fresno State (5-3), Bowling Green (4-5), UC Davis (4-4), Tulsa (4-4), Hawaii (2-6) and San Jose State (1-6). That’s a whopping 21-36 for their other opponents, totalling 28-37 overall. And don’t even get me started on breaking down those opponents wins.
On the other side, TCU made an attempt to play multiple BCS opponents, even if their record isn’t as great as they may have thought. TCU’s schedule includes Virginia (3-5), Texas State (5-3), Clemson (5-3), SMU (4-4), Air Force (5-4), Colorado State (3-6), BYU (6-2) and UNLV (3-6). The bottom line here is 34-33. They also play #14 Utah before the end of the season. If TCU runs the table, they obviously deserve the BCS bid over Boise State. Boise’s toughest remaining game is against 5-3 Nevada.
Expect some tears at the Smurf Turf because if TCU wins out, they are getting a BCS bowl and Boise State is going to be the in the Boise Bowl again. If Boise wants to play with the big boys, they need to get rid of UC Davis and Bowling Green and be willing to travel to some BCS schools every year. One win against Oregon isn’t going to cut it.
